You have invested both time and money in your studies so that you can improve your future, or current, career prospects. Now that you have finished studying the material you need to take that final step and write your exams so that you can gain your internationally recognised PRINCE2® certification. This sounds simple enough but often there are unanswered questions; and even questions that you had not thought of asking until this point. Provided below is all the information that you will require to book your PRINCE2® exam smoothly.

The first thing to be aware of is that there are two options available to students for writing their PRINCE2® Foundation and Practitioner exams – online or at an official exam centre.

Online

Where? The PRINCE2® Foundation and Practitioner exams can both now be taken online. There is no specific location required – just a computer/laptop with a webcam to act as a proctor device and a reliable, high-speed internet connection.

When? The online PRINCE2® exams can be taken at any time – 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. This makes the online exam an extremely convenient option; particularly for those students who are working in full time positions whilst studying.

Booking Notice? There is a notice period required to book an online PRINCE2® exam so be sure to schedule yours at least 3-5 working days in advance.

Cost? The PRINCE2® Foundation exam costs £210.00 and the Practitioner exam fees are £286.00.

Certificate Issued? When you write your PRINCE2® exam online you will receive a provisional result immediately after completing your exam. However, this needs to be verified by APMG (awarding body) before your certificate is issued. After verification, your certificate will be issued to you by APMG within 10-14 working days.

Exam Format? The format differs according to whether you are writing the PRINCE2® Foundation or Practitioner exam. The Foundation exam is in multiple choice format and the Practitioner format is objective testing.

Number of Questions? The PRINCE2® Foundation exam has 75 questions, with 5 of them being trial questions for research purposes. The trial questions will not count towards your final mark, however, you will not be notified which are the trial questions. Therefore, the Foundation exam results in a mark out of 70. The Practitioner exam consists of different categories with 8-10 questions in each – a total of 80 marks possible.

Time? The PRINCE2® Foundation exam is one hour and the Practitioner exam is two and a half hours (150 minutes). There is no extra time allocated for reading so be aware of this when pacing yourself during the exam.

Pass Mark? The pass mark for the PRINCE2® Foundation exam is 50%. This requires 35 marks out of 70. The Practitioner exam requires a minimum of 44 marks out of a possible 80; resulting in a required 55% pass mark.

Open or closed book exam? The Foundation exam is a closed-book exam and no notes, manuals or any other materials will be allowed during the course of the exam. The PRINCE2® Practitioner exam is open-book, but this is restricted to only the official PRINCE2® manual.

Can I postpone? An exam can be postponed once without incurring additional charges; on the condition that the postponement is made within a notice period of ten (10) working days prior to the exam date. If you need to reschedule outside of this notice period, or for a second (or subsequent) time, an administration fee will be payable. Although it is possible to postpone exams, they are non-transferable and cannot be sold or handed over to a third party.

Exam Centre

Where? If the online option is not suitable for your specific needs, or you simply wish to write the exam in a more traditional manner, then there is still the option for writing the PRINCE2® exams at an exam centre. They can be written at any APMG exam centre – in the UK these are located in London, Milton Keynes, York, Birmingham and Chester.

When? There are specific exam sessions when writing a PRINCE2® exam at an official APMG exam centre. Exams are only written on Fridays and there are three session times to choose from – 10h00, 12h00 and 14h00.

Booking Notice? The notice period required when booking to write your PRINCE2® exam at an exam centre is longer than when booking to write it online. If you choose to write at an exam centre, be sure to book a minimum of three weeks prior to the date that you wish to sit the exam.
